"Why canola?", a customer asked.
Soap is a wash off product but the oils used do affect your skin. In cold process soap, Canola oil is similar to Olive oil as they are both mild (less stripping of your natural skin oils). The result or feel is nearly indistinguishable. Canola cures in less time, lathers more, and is more cost effect compared to Olive oil.
There are two types of Canola oil: industrial and cooking. We use cooking Canola known as rapeseed. Most of the cooking Canola in the US comes from Canada.
According to a 2007 book titled, Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants:
"The name for rapeseed comes from the Latin word rapum meaning turnip.
Turnip, rutabaga (swede), cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and mustard are related to rapeseed. Rapeseed belongs to the genus Brassica. Brassica oilseed varieties are some of the oldest plants cultivated, with documentation of its use tracing back to India from 4,000 years ago, and use in China and Japan 2,000 years ago."
